You're going outside anyways - bring your brushes!

Come for a walk on the beach. Learn to paint waves. Muse upon inquiry. It's time for a visit with Grandmother Ocean. Tuition: $97

Grandmother Ocean is majestic and wild and can wash you right off your feet and tumble you in the waves along with the seaweed and fish. She is not for the faint of heart, and yet she can be gentle in all her beautiful, wild energy. Perhaps that is why I am so drawn to her. I could sit all day on a beach and watch the waves crashing.

Grandmother Ocean is my heart home, the place I go to find balance in this crazy world or just to get sandy and search for shells and sand crabs. A place to let the rhythm of the waves resonate in my body; to merge into the serenity of the ocean while I paint and create.

What is the ocean for you?
Do you live near it or visit often?
Or do you wish you could?

My ocean is the Pacific Ocean off the coast of central California. Your ocean may be altogether different in character and temperament. Or, you may not live near the ocean at all – in which case, this class is a wonderful way to connect into the energy of the ocean.

I'm very excited about this class because not only will you learn to create your own Earth Prayers, we will be painting with watercolors as well!

Join me for a visit with Grandmother Ocean,

Walk in Inquiry

Together we explore the patterns and wisdom of the ocean, bringing our sketchbook along with us. Each week you engage with an inquiry to inspire you and get you talking to your muse. In this way, we open the doors to connection.

Paint with Intention

Annette teaches Asian sumi-e painting through the lens of Intentional Creativity®. You learn to ask what wants to be drawn, connect into the earth, and to allow the words that want to be written to arise.

Create Earth Prayers

Demos are provided at each step of the way along with reference materials to work with as you learn to create earth prayers of your very own. While you are encouraged to visit the ocean, it is not required; everything you need is online.

Deepen your connection to the earth through what you create.

“Paint like that’s what you’re doing for the rest of your life.” – Sue Hoya Sellars

What to Expect

  • The class is designed as 4 lessons, one per week. Each week there is an Inquiry and three Earth Prayer demonstrations.
  • Our private Earth Prayers Facebook group is open ALL summer to support you.
  • If you live near the ocean, I encourage you to visit them during the class for inspiration.
  • Plan to spend between 1-2 hours a week practicing and following the prompts.

Shares from students:

"I would highly recommend this class to others. As far as advice for future participants, this is the perfect class for getting in touch with nature. Drawing from nature was intimidating to me, but this process promotes simplicity and encourages you to use all your senses to capture the essence of the object one is drawing. It also helped me to recognize the beauty in nature in even the smallest things. Also, don't get hung up on the poetry. Words and phrases actually do just come up naturally. This was actually one of the classes I have enjoyed the most."

Linda Cassella

"This was a lovely, calming class that brought me more into myself and my connection with nature through art in a different way than my usual one. I am a painter of nature, but this was different, relaxing into the simple essence of one thing at a time. I enjoyed that! I appreciated the timely reminders, which seemed to come at just the right spacing, and the short videos, which were easy to make time for. The videos and handouts, also, were a nice balance of teaching, like a three-legged stool: discussion or meditation, demonstration, and inquiry. And, as with art in Intentional Creativity, the product, although important and trickier than it looks, was subordinate to the process of looking within while looking without ~ a great metaphor for life! I think this was a great distillation of the great art of sumi-e, but without any cultural or language baggage - just the pureness of learning it. Best of all, I can take this with me in my purse and do it while traveling and jaunting about, my lifestyle now. Thank you, Annette!"

"Thank you for crafting such a wonderful experience. The class flew by and you gave me so much to think about and practice. I had no hesitations about taking your class. I’ve loved all the Earth Prayers you share on FB, love nature and poetry and your class seemed like the perfect vehicle for putting it all together. Rock and shells were an intriguing challenge. I loved seeing other participants’ works and reading AND LEARNING from your feedback. I recommend this class to others. Your warmth and encouragement as a teacher and clearness of presentation made the experience enriching to the mind and soul. I hope to make sumi-e painting a part of my daily routine, it’s a great morning meditation."

"I had the pleasure of meeting Annette in person a few years ago, and when I saw her online offering I had no hesitation in joining her class. She has a loving and caring way of presenting the material, her knowledge and her passion. I really enjoyed the written and video prompts each week, and the way interaction online was encouraged. The videos and lessons were short and effective, which was perfect for me with a busy schedule. The skills, practice, and knowledge that was shared can be translated into anyone's day to day life. I would highly recommend this class to anyone who is looking for a way to start a creative practice and connect to the world around them on a deeper level. "

"Annette’s beautiful, deft teaching style put me at ease and opened my eyes—and heart—to see in new ways. Her Earth Prayer sessions were soulful and fun homages to nature’s hidden beauty. With her skilled guidance, I learned to connect to my inner stillness to see forms and hear messages that transformed into poetry."

~ Rachel Bavis

"Annette invites us to discover new ways of seeing and teaches a simple, powerful process for reflecting the beauty we find. She taught me how to capture the "essence" of natural objects with pen and watercolor that I now carry with me all the time. The act of creating these lovely "Earth Prayers" as she calls them helps me be truly present in the moment so that when I see them again, I am immediately transported back to the time and place where I found them and get to re-live that moment in its fullness. I'm so grateful for all that Annette has taught me!"

~ Tina Greene

"Annette Wagner’s Earth Prayers are a wonderful addition to my sketch pages! I had the pleasure of sitting with her on the beach one summer learning the sumi techniques that she lovingly shared. These simple ink sketches and deep listening skills have enriched my creative time while out in nature. Thank you Annette for your teachings and your Earth Prayers."

~ Sepha Nisbet

"I enjoyed the pictures because here during the course we still had snow storms. Mind you today is real nice and I can enjoy my practice outdoors. I also enjoyed the bonus with Sue that was super. And I have to say the bonus Friday's were nice as it made me feel like it was ongoing not something that was filmed a couple of years ago. I truly enjoyed the class - it was perfect timing for me as I am making a commitment to be in nature more and now I can carry my note book and pen with me."

About Annette

Some might think that walking the earth is a very serious thing, however for Annette, walking the earth and painting what she finds is just as much about pelican chuckles and snail whimsy as it is about stark white bones and tree wisdom.

Annette has a way of connecting into whatever message wants to come through her brush and onto the paper and sharing that connection with us. She loves opening the door for others to pick up a brush and sketchbook and create their own earth prayer paintings.

Annette lives with her dancing daughter Eleanor, two crazy cats, Hero and Princess, along with the man of her heart and partner in adventure, Cass. When she is not contemplating how to draw the patterns of feathers on a goose, she is likely sitting on a beach watching the waves or musing in her studio.

Annette is a working artist and an Intentional Creativity Teacher who studied with American Master Painter Sue Hoya Sellars, our Intentional Creativity Art Matriarch and with Shiloh Sophia, the founder of the Intentional Creativity movement.

Annette is Art Doctor and Faculty at the Color of Woman School where IC Teachers are trained and a refugee from Silicon Valley with 21 patents to her name. She is a big fan of taking left turns in one’s life to explore new ways of being.
